Introduction

The Department of English was established in 2005. Our undergraduate curriculum includes specialized English courses such as English Language Teaching, Introduction to Linguistics, American and English Literature, professional English courses, English teacher’ training courses and other general English courses. The structure of our department’s courses is divided into two categories, including 28 credits for general courses and 100 credits for professional courses. The undergraduate program aims to prepare our students to become teachers of English in elementary schools and to enter other professions that require a good command of English.

The master’s program was established in 2016 and focuses on the development of English teaching and learning methodologies and practices at elementary school level. Students need to take at least 32 credits, including 11 compulsory credits and 21 elective credits.

Facilities and Environment
The department is located on the third and fourth floors of the Qin-Pu Building and is equipped with multimedia classrooms and a professional interpreting classroom, which supports streaming video courses, videoconferencing and cross-cultural communication. The Self-access Learning Center, located in the second floor of Le-Qun Building, provides students with access to various software applications and hardware devices to assist their learning development. In addition, native speakers from various countries work with small groups of students to supplement their academic language learning courses.

Undergraduate Programs
The Department provides two academic tracks for learning: a teacher training program and a non-teacher training program. The teacher-training program offers students the opportunity to receive certification in elementary school level English teaching. The non-teacher training program provides students with opportunities to develop their proficiency through courses such as applied English courses, English Literature, Translation and Interpretation among other courses. Students receive training in speaking, listening, reading, translation, and interpretation. Our curriculum emphasizes both theory and practice in its courses of literature, linguistics, English teaching, and applied English. Our department encourages students to not only develop English language proficiency, but also to nurture their personal and professional development, and to develop an international awareness of global affairs.
